Q&A: Zelda Fletcher

We asked Zelda Fletcher, Telescribe, about her experience working with ScribeAmerica:

Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you get started with ScribeAmerica?

I am a Nationally Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. I acquired that certification in September 2020 after graduating from Blue Cliff Vocational College. I immediately started working as a CCMA in a small clinic in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. I stopped working there because I moved to McComb, MS after finding out about my pregnancy with my now 8-month-old son. I immediately began looking for work-from-home opportunities in the medical field, and that’s how I came across the job posting for ScribeAmerica. I put in my application and was immediately contacted for an interview. I was ecstatic to be back in the medical field and able to work from home!

Why are you interested in working in healthcare?

I have always had a drive and passion to help others and make a difference in people’s lives. I also love the busy, fast-paced schedule it offers! Being able to think critically and clinically has always been my strength and working in the medical field keeps my brain sharp, so to speak!

What have you learned from exploring different areas of medicine? What is your preferred specialty?

I have learned so much! I worked in a general clinic setting, and now work for an oncologist, and the most important thing I learned is no specialty is easy. There are easy days, but most of the time, it is a very busy, complex environment with several different things going on, and you must know your stuff to succeed as a scribe in any specialty. You are responsible for pre-charting correctly to assist the doctor, and making things as efficient for them as possible.

My preferred specialty is general practice. I love the diversity of it. You see people from all walks of life, from young to old, and you see a variety of medical issues. It is a great way to get a lot of experience within one specialty!

What advice would you give future scribes?

I would advise future scribes to pay attention to the training materials and research about the specialty where you are placed. Take as many notes as you can and pay attention to how the doctor works and how his or her flow is within the clinic. Specifically, make sure you are notating the way the doctor wants you to, because at the end of the day, you are there to help them within their profession!

What is next for you in your professional career?

I have recently gone back to college for human services. I plan to become a human services professional in the medical field. I would love to work with children and young adults that are struggling due to a mental health issues or other medical issues. My dream would to be a youth counselor or therapist that helps young people find their way back into society as productive members of their communities!
